The on-going project of our club is our Eagle Cane Project. It is a program started in the 1990's in a club outside of Washington, D.C. where a hand-turned cane was created, and attached to a hand-carved Eagles' head, and presented to a Wounded Veteran. We've picked this up, even as a new club as a way we can say a small Thank You for a member of our Armed Forces that was injured while in the service of our country. As a collaborative effort between our club, the Grand Valley Wood Carvers, and the Black Canyon Wood Carvers, we identify potential recipients and create a one-of-a-kind presentation cane for them.
Eagle Cane Project Local Clubs Join Forces to Show Support A project conceived and implemented by the Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers in 2004 has come to the Grand Valley uniting three clubs. The Grand Valley Woodturners presented the project to the Black Canyon Woodcarvers of Montrose and the Grand Valley Woodcarvers of Grand Junction who have embraced the project. In tribute to individual wounded veterans, the artisans of the three clubs are combining their unique skills to create an artistic representation of support and respect. Each cane is turned by members of the Woodturners Club. Members of the Woodcarvers Clubs will hand carve the Eagle Head. The cane is painted, stained or woodburned and includes an inscription of the recipient-veteran's name, rank, and unit. Each cane is a unique combination of each artist's skill. If you are a veteran or know a local veteran who has suffered a combat related injury, please contact Buck with the Grand Valley Woodturners Organization.

As of April 2009, we've created and presented 52 canes, and we have many more "Thanks" to say. |
